What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant is when we replace missing or severely damaged teeth that can’t be treated with options like a filling or root canal. Your dental implant has three main parts:

The tooth implant, which is fitted into your jaw, is made from titanium or titanium alloy to ensure biocompatibility and durability. Your cosmetic dentist in Melbourne will surgically insert it into your jawbone, where the root of your original tooth used to exist.

The abutment is the part of your implant that’s visible above the gum line. Made from porcelain, gold, or titanium, it’s attached to the implant using a screw, which also connects your implant to the crown.

Your crown is the restoration of your missing tooth, which is fixed onto the abutment. The crown looks just like your original tooth and is usually made from porcelain fused metal (PFM) alloy. Once it’s colour matched, your crown will be cemented onto your abutment.

What To Expect During a Dental Implant Procedure In Melbourne

Initial Consultation

At our cosmetic dental clinic in Melbourne, we also start the process with a complimentary consultation for our patients. Here, our experienced cosmetic dentist will assess your oral health and determine your suitability for a dental implant procedure.

Preparation or Pre-Treatment

Even if your dentist has determined your suitability for dental implants, some preparation may be required. For example, tooth extraction if you haven’t removed a severely damaged or decayed tooth already. Similarly, if you’re showing signs of gum disease, it needs to be treated first. It’s also possible that your jawbone isn’t strong enough to support an implant, in which case bone grafting is needed.

Dental Implant Placement

In the first procedure, your dentist will surgically place the titanium implant into your jawbone. After this, you’ll wait for about 2 to 4 months so that the implant fuses with the jawbone. This is called osseointegration and gives your new tooth a stable foundation.

Abutment

Once your implant fuses with the bone, your dentist will attach an abutment to the implant in the second procedure. Like the first procedure, this is also done under anesthesia. Your gums will heal around the abutment for one to two weeks.

Tooth Impressions and Temporary Crown

When your gums heal, the abutment is removed to take tooth impressions. These are used to make the final crown. Then, the abutment is put back on the implant and you’re fitted with a temporary crown. You’ll wear this for about 2 weeks, which gives your gums time to heal around it.

Permanent Crown

In the last visit for your dental implants, a permanent crown will be fitted onto your implant, giving you a new set of perfect teeth.

Benefits Of Dental Implants

Supports Surrounding Teeth

When you have one or more missing teeth, your remaining teeth can shift into gaps, causing poor alignment. Getting dental implants gives nearby teeth stability, reducing the risk of uneven wear and poor alignment.

Improves Your Appearance

Missing teeth can leave gaps in your smile and take away essential support that gives your face its structure. This can affect your confidence and cause facial sagging, making you appear much older. Getting dental implants can improve your self-esteem and make you less conscious of your smile.

Looks Natural

Poorly fitted dentures can look and feel awkward in the mouth. Meanwhile, custom-made crowns match the shape, colour, and size of your natural teeth. They make it impossible to tell that you’ve had work done and feel natural, so you can smile and chew comfortably.

Preserves Your Jawbone

Having teeth is what stimulates the jawbone, while missing teeth can contribute to bone loss. By getting a dental implant, you’ll maintain the structure of your jawbone, which is responsible for much of your oral health.

Signs That It’s Time To Get Dental Implants

You have one or more missing teeth, which affects your confidence.

You’re having difficulty chewing or speaking due to gaps in your teeth.

Unsecured dentures feel uncomfortable and keep slipping.

Your tooth is severely damaged and beyond repair using typical strategies like a root canal.

You’ve already experienced some bone loss from missing teeth.

Your missing teeth have caused surrounding teeth to shift, affecting their alignment.

As long as you have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone, you’re likely eligible for dental implants. We recommend visiting our cosmetic dental clinic in Melbourne for a free consultation to determine your eligibility.

With dental bridges, you’ll be replacing one or more teeth using a prosthetic that’s anchored to an implant or natural teeth.

You’ll be fitted with dentures and temporary crowns over your implants while your gums heal and the implant fuses with the jawbone.

Yes, we offer treatments to secure your dentures to an implant to stabilise them and improve comfort. Unsecured dentures can slip and feel uncomfortable in the mouth, affecting your ability to chew or speak. We recommend replacing them with dentures for a permanent solution that looks and feels natural.

Our dental implants are typically made of titanium or titanium alloy, while crowns are usually made of ceramic or porcelain to ensure a natural look.
